Clustering climate reconstructions

چکیده

A systematic coherence analysis is presented for the set of the most prominent millennial reconstructions of Northern hemispheric temperature. The large number of mutual coherences underwent a clustering analysis that revealed five significant, mutually incoherent (“inconsistent”) clusters. The use of multiple proxies seems to be causing the 5 clustering, at least in part, but not in an easily definable, physical way. Alternatively, a multidimensional scaling is performed on the same set of coherences. This results in a graphic, two-dimensional rendering of the reconstructions whose geometry (location and distance) is given by the coherences. Both approaches offer complementary ways in dealing with the inconsistencies. 10

Separating forced from chaotic climate variability over the past millennium

Reconstructions of past climate show notable temperature variability over the past millennium, with relatively warm conditions during the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) and a relatively cold Little Ice Age (LIA). Multimodel simulations of the past millennium are used together with a wide range of reconstructions of Northern Hemispheric mean annual temperature to separate climate variability fro...

Strengths and Weaknesses of Quantitative Climate Reconstructions Based on Late-Quaternary Biological Proxies

The importance of reconstructing past environments quantitatively in palaeoecology is reviewed by showing that many ecological questions asked of palaeoecological data commonly involve the reconstructions of past environment. Three basic approaches to reconstructing past climate from palaeoecological data are outlined and discussed in terms of their assumptions, strengths, and weaknesses. These...

Estimating 750 years of temperature variations and uncertainties in the Pyrenees by tree-ring reconstructions and climate simulations

Past temperature variations are usually inferred from proxy data or estimated using general circulation models. Comparisons between climate estimations derived from proxy records and from model simulations help to better understand mechanisms driving climate variations, and also offer the possibility to identify deficiencies in both approaches. This paper presents regional temperature reconstru...

Evaluation of Northern Hemisphere natural climate variability in multiple temperature reconstructions and global climate model simulations

The detection of anthropogenic climate change in observations and the validation of climate models both rely on understanding natural climate variability. To evaluate internal climate variability, we apply spectral analysis to time series of surface air temperature (SAT) from nine coupled general circulation model (GCM) simulations, three recent global paleotemperature reconstructions, and Nort...

Are reconstructed pre-instrumental hemispheric temperatures consistent with instrumental hemispheric temperatures?

[1] Reconstructions of Northern Hemisphere near-surface temperatures from climate ‘proxy’ data such as tree rings, ice cores, and corals, suggest that late 20th century Northern Hemisphere mean warmth is anomalous in the context of the past several centuries and likely at least the past two millennia. Though substantial uncertainties in the paleoclimate reconstructions exist, these findings add...
